(ZENIT News / Changui, 09.13.2024).- Pope Francis, on the final leg of his apostolic journey, spent his morning in Singapore with a visit to the Santa Teresa Home, a quiet yet meaningful stop that reflected the core values of compassion and care. The home, founded 90 years ago by the Little Sisters of the Poor, currently houses 200 residents. Among them was Khung Seok, a lively 105-year-old resident who greeted the Pope with a warm smile, holding flags of both the Vatican and Singapore. The brief visit was filled with intimate moments, as the Pope walked through the courtyard, passing by rooms where residents receive the dedicated care of the Catholic Welfare Services.
After leaving the home, Pope Francis headed to Catholic Junior College, where he was welcomed by Cardinal William Goh Seng Chye and Singapore’s Minister for Culture, Community, and Youth, Edwin Tong. The interreligious encounter was a highlight of the day, symbolizing the importance of unity and understanding across faiths. Young people of different religions participated in the event, offering personal testimonies and performances that celebrated diversity and hope. A group of youth with disabilities performed a special dance, underscoring themes of inclusivity.
In his unscripted remarks, Pope Francis spoke directly to the youth, encouraging them to build bridges of peace and solidarity in a world too often divided by differences. Following the interreligious meeting, the Pope made his way to Changi International Airport for a formal farewell ceremony. Upon arrival, he was greeted once again by Minister Edwin Tong and other local officials. As he prepared to board the plane back to Rome, Pope Francis took a moment to express his gratitude for the warm reception he received in Singapore.
Shortly after departure, the Pope sent a telegram to Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, offering prayers for the nation’s peace, unity, and wellbeing, while thanking the citizens of Singapore for their generous hospitality during his visit.
The Pope’s departure from Singapore marked the conclusion of an apostolic journey that spanned several nations, including Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Timor-Leste. His flight aboard a Singapore Airlines A350 left at 12:25 PM local time, with his return to Rome’s Fiumicino Airport scheduled for 6:25 PM.
This journey, filled with moments of connection, care, and interfaith dialogue, reinforced Pope Francis’ ongoing commitment to fostering peace and understanding in a fragmented world.
