Article: Church’s Smallest Members «Playing» Mass
Being about the same age as Archbishop Burke, this story rang familiar to me. I was not aware of an «official» Mass kit as a child, so I made my own…a breadbox was spray-painted gold to be my Tabernacle, a goblet was found to be my chalice, etc. I made my vestments from fabric I found around the house. My poor friends and little brother were stuck being acolytes and congregation. A shot glass on a piece of white bread cut out a wonderful celebrant’s host…you get the picture. That «playing» led me to the vocation I sought from my childhood, and now I celebrate the Eucharist with great awe and reverence. I am delighted to hear that this is experiencing a resurgence in children today.
