Cardinal Oscar Rodríguez Maradiaga of Honduras accused Ted Turner, vice chairman of AOL Time Warner Inc. and founder of the CNN news network, of being «openly anti-Catholic,» according to excerpts of an interview released by the magazine 30 Giorni ahead of its publication this week.
«Not to mention newspapers like the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Boston Globe which were protagonists of what I do not hesitate to define as a persecution against the Church,» said the archbishop of Tegucigalpa.
The 30 Giorni article comes as U.S. bishops prepare to gather this week in Dallas, Texas, to discuss child sex abuse by priests.
Cardinal Rodríguez said the U.S. media were concentrating on the scandals in part to get back at the Church for its support for a Palestinian homeland and for its opposition to abortion, euthanasia and the death penalty.
