Pope Prays for Victims of Indonesia Tsunami

During Angelus, Pope expresses closeness to people of the Island of Sulawesi

Pope Francis prayed for those struck by an earthquake and a tsunami in Indonesia.

During his Sunday Angelus today Sept. 30, 2018, the Holy Father expressed his closeness, and invited the nearly 30,000 people present at Saint Peter’s Square to join him in saying a Hail Mary.

“I express my closeness to the population of the Island of Sulawesi, struck by a strong tsunami,” said the Pope.

With sources saying it claimed more than 830 deaths, Francis said: “I pray for the deceased – which are unfortunately numerous – for the wounded, and for those who have lost their homes and employment.

“May the Lord console them and sustain the efforts of those who are taking part in the relief efforts,” Pope Francis said, before inviting the crowd to pray with him an “Ave Maria.”

An earthquake followed by a tsunami hit the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, and especially the cities of Palu (360,000 inhabitants) and Donggala (300,000 inhabitants, near the epicenter of the earthquake), Friday, Sept. 28, and the death toll continues to grow. More than 500 people have been seriously injured.
