The symposium, entitled «The Challenges of Science,» is drawing luminaries in the fields of astronomy, physics, neurobiology and immunology, to mention but a few.

It is the only academy of sciences of a supranational character in the world. Current members include physicist Stephen W. Hawking and Nobel Prize recipient Rita Levi-Montalcini.

Today, John Paul II raised Argentine priest Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, chancellor of the academy, to the dignity of bishop. Monsignor Sorondo was one of the Pope´s collaborators in writing the encyclical «Fides et Ratio.»
