British Bishops Give Nod to New General Secretary

LONDON, MAR. 14, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The Catholic Bishops´ Conference of England and Wales has agreed to the appointment of Father Andrew Summersgill, 38, of the Diocese of Leeds to succeed Monsignor Arthur Roche as its general secretary.

In 1980, Summersgill went to the English College in Rome, where he studied philosophy, theology and canon law at the Gregorian University. He was ordained priest Sept. 7, 1986, and later earned a license in canon law. He became vice chancellor of the Diocese of Leeds in 1991 and judicial vicar and chancellor in 1995.
