Peru Turning to Prayer at a Critical Political Moment

LIMA, Peru, MAR. 26, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Amid a post-Fujimori-era electoral campaign, a national interfaith committee will lead «A Prayer for Peru» on Tuesday.

Archbishop Luis Bambarén, president of the Catholic bishops´ conference, together with Jewish and other Christian communities will participate in a prayer meeting in the Great Park of Lima. About 4,500 students of Christian and Jewish schools will also be in attendance.

The initiative is to «pray to the God of all men and women, to bless Peru with peace and fraternity, liberty and prosperity,» according to sources in the bishops´ conference.

The event is supported by the Inter-Confessional Committee of Peru, which includes the nation´s Catholic bishops´ conference, the National Evangelical Council, the Lutheran Church, the Presbyterian and Reformed Evangelical Church, the Methodist Church, the Orthodox Church and the Jewish Association.
