Chile Moves to Abolish Death Penalty

SANTIAGO, Chile, APR. 4, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Chile moved to abolish the death penalty and replace it with an effective sentence of 40 years imprisonment.

The Senate already approved abolition of the death penalty, and on Tuesday the Chamber of Deputies followed suit, 66-37.

President Ricardo Lagos will promulgate the new law after a commission of deputies and senators approves an article allowing the Supreme Court, on a two-thirds vote, to free defendants who have served 40 years in prison.
