The Senate already approved abolition of the death penalty, and on Tuesday the Chamber of Deputies followed suit, 66-37.

President Ricardo Lagos will promulgate the new law after a commission of deputies and senators approves an article allowing the Supreme Court, on a two-thirds vote, to free defendants who have served 40 years in prison.
