20% of Chinese Do Not Know What AIDS Is

BEIJING, APR. 11, 2001 (Zenit.org).- One in every five Chine does not know what AIDS is, the government has discovered.

The state Commission for Family Planning carried out research last December using a sample of 7,000 people of different regions, the China Daily newspaper reported.

The research also revealed that 71% of those interviewed did not know how AIDS is transmitted.

According to the Health Ministry, at the end of last year, there were 22,500 seropositive cases recorded in China. Other estimates, however, say there could be more than 600,000 cases. Since 1985, the total number of recorded deaths from AIDS has been 466.
