Dublin Cardinal Saluted for 50 Years of Priesthood

VATICAN CITY, MAY 18, 2001 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II sent a congratulatory letter to Cardinal Desmond Connell, archbishop of Dublin, on the 50th anniversary of his priestly ordination.

Desmond Connell was born March 24, 1926, in Phibsboro, in the Archdiocese of Dublin, Ireland, and ordained May 19, 1951. In his letter, written in Latin, John Paul II makes special mention of the 35 years the Irishman spent as a professor and cites Jesus´ command: «Go and teach.»

The Pope named him archbishop of Dublin in January 1988 and made him a cardinal last February.
