ROME, JULY 2, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Padre Pio might be canonized next year, an official said.

Father Gerardo Di Flumeri, one of the vice postulators of the Capuchin blessed´s cause of canonization, said Sunday that the Holy See confirmed to him that “Padre Pio will be a saint in the year 2002.”

The miracle that may serve for this official recognition was linked to an 8-year-old named Matteo, of San Giovanni Rotondo, where Padre Pio resided. The child was inexplicably cured of meningitis in 2000.

Vatican commissions must still examine the case, however.
