Chilean Court Bans Sale of Morning-After Pill

SANTIAGO, Chile, AUG. 30, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The Supreme Court in Chile has overturned a lower court decision that permitted the sale of the so-called morning-after pill.

The Supreme Court´s 3-2 ruling Wednesday will impede the marketing of the pill, which can cause early abortions. The Chilean Constitution defends the right to life of the unborn.

Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz, archbishop of Santiago and president of the Chilean bishops´ conference, expressed his approval of the court´s ruling and said the decision is a victory for those who defend life.
