Auxiliary Bishop Shlemon Warduni of Baghdad of the Chaldeans told Vatican Radio that the bombing of the population would «worsen the situation» and be «a great act of injustice.»

Bishop Warduni said he is grateful to John Paul II for the support he has given Iraq by denouncing the embargo that has caused the death «of a great number of children and elderly people» and robbed youth of «hope.»

On Tuesday the Holy Father renewed his appeal for an end to the economic sanctions imposed on Iraq.

Vatican sources said the primary victims of the embargo are the innocent. They contend that the sanctions strengthen Saddam Hussein´s regime, since it is the only source of distribution of resources in the isolated country.
