The court of Bakori, in the northern state of Katsina, postponed until June 3 the announcement of a decision on Amina Lawal. The 30-year-old appealed the death sentence which was applied under Islamic law, the Misna agency reported. A dozen states in Nigeria follow Islamic law.
Attorneys for the woman, a native of the village of Kurami, said they do not regard the appeals court´s delay favorably.
A Katsina court on March 22 sentenced divorcee Lawal to stoning after she gave birth to a daughter. A man accused in the case has denied being the baby´s father.
Lawal´s case came to the public´s attention on the same day that the nightmare of another Nigerian woman, Safyia Husseini Tungar Tudu, ended. The latter also faced stoning in a similar case, but she was acquitted by the appeals court after a worldwide outcry.
