5 Cardinals Named to Church´s Supreme Court

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 9, 2002 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II named five cardinals, including Edward Egan of New York, to a Vatican tribunal that hears appeals for marriage annulments and Vatican City criminal and civil cases.

The Vatican Press Office on Thursday announced the appointments to the Apostolic Signature, the Church´s supreme court.

The tribunal handles appeals from the Roman Rota, which considers requests for marriage annulments. Cardinal Egan, an expert in canon law, was a judge in the Rota during his long career in Rome.

The other four cardinals named to the appeals tribunal are Jozef Glemp, of Poland; Agostino Cacciavillan and Sergio Sebastiani, of Italy; and Walter Kasper, of Germany.
