Attack on Muslim Tombs Condemned by Church in Argentina

BUENOS AIRES, JULY 17, 2002 (Zenit.org).- The Catholic Church in Argentina expressed its solidarity with the country’s Muslim community, after one of its cemeteries was desecrated.

Father Guillermo Marco, director of the press office of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires, issued a statement Monday that reads: «The Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires wishes to express its solidarity with Muslim brothers, in face of the grave profanation perpetrated the night before last in the Tablada Cemetery.»

«Moreover, it supports them in prayer for their loved ones buried in the said necropolis,» the statement adds.

«We expect the strongest repudiation on the part of society of this vandalistic actions, which were perpetrated on other occasions in Jewish necropolises,» the spokesman said. «We pray to God to infuse the gift of peace in our people, in order to uproot all religious discrimination from our spirits.»
