Retired Auxiliary of Montreal Dies

MONTREAL, MARCH 17, 2003 (Zenit.org).- Bishop Leonard Crowley, retired auxiliary of Montreal, died Saturday. He was 81.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday in Mary Queen of the World Cathedral, the Canadian bishops’ conference announced.

Leonard Crowley was born on Dec. 28, 1921, in Montreal, and ordained to the priesthood in 1947. He was named a bishop in 1971 and was the third English-speaking auxiliary bishop to serve the Archdiocese of Montreal.

He played a key role in the evolution of education in Quebec and was a strong proponent of interfaith dialogue. He retired in 1997.
