Bishop Named for Toronto Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy

TORONTO, MAY 7, 2003 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II named Father Stephen Victor Chmilar as the new bishop for the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Toronto and Eastern Canada.

He will succeed Bishop Cornelius John Pasichny, who is retiring.

Bishop-elect Chmilar’s episcopal consecration will be celebrated July 23 at Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Mississauga, Ontario, where he is pastor.

Born May 24, 1945, in Lamont, Alberta, he is the son of Steve Chmilar and Alexandra Osinchuk. As a member of the Order of St. Basil the Great, he was ordained a priest on June 11, 1972.

At the time of his nomination he was chancellor, a member of the Presbyteral Council, and a member of the College of Consultors of the Eparchy of Toronto.

The eparchy has 89 diocesan priests, nine religious priests, 29 women and non-ordained men religious, and a lay pastoral minister, serving a Ukrainian Catholic population of 41,010 in 76 parishes and missions.
