Cardinal Posadas and six other people were killed on May 24, 1993, in the parking lot of the international airport of Guadalajara, the city of which he was archbishop.

In a recent letter to the Mexican president, the Executive Council of the Mexican episcopal conference said that over all this time, the attorneys general of the two previous governments, as well as that of the present one, «have not wanted, or have been unable to investigate in depth and in a consistent manner in order to identify the crime’s material and intellectual authors.»

«Convinced that only the truth can make us free and that only the truth can lead us to forgiveness and reconciliation,» Cardinal Rivera said Sunday, «we need to know the truth in the case of the assassination of Cardinal Posadas and in all the social, economic and political events that so affect us.»
