«Profoundly saddened by the tragic news of the attack, we express our heartfelt sympathy to the relatives of the victims,» said a papal telegram sent Saturday.

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano sent the text to Archbishop Antonio Mennini, apostolic nuncio in the Russian Federation.

The text states: «Commending to the Lord’s mercy the souls of these deceased, as well as all the victims of violence, His Holiness invokes the consoling apostolic blessing for all those who have been hit by such a tragic event.»

The subway bombing killed 39 and wounded more than 100, including 21 still in critical condition.
