Bishop Dupré left his post Tuesday and was being treated at a medical facility, diocesan spokesman Mark Dupont said, according to the Associated Press.
»It is a serious ongoing situation, but it shouldn’t be construed as imminently life-threatening,» Dupont was quoted as saying.
In May, Bishop Dupré had said he was considering retiring because of back and heart problems, the AP said. Bishop Dupré has headed the diocese of about 260,000 Catholics since May 1995.
