Bishop Joseph Galante said Thursday that he was taking the stance primarily because the Democratic governor remarried without receiving a Church annulment, the Associated Press reported.
The bishop, who was installed in the diocese today, also cited McGreevey’s support of abortion rights, stem cell research and other positions that contradict Church teaching.
Last week, Cardinal Francis Arinze, prefect of the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, said a Catholic politician who supports abortion should not go to Communion and priests must deny them the sacrament.
