Doubters Should Avoid Sacraments, Says Dublin Prelate

DUBLIN, Ireland, JULY 16, 2004 (Zenit.org).- People who do not believe in the «real essence» of the sacraments should not present themselves for them, says Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin.

He was commenting on the widespread practice of people availing of the sacraments during weddings and funerals who do not normally attend Mass or practice the faith, the Irish Independent reported Thursday.

The archbishop told the Kerry diocesan magazine, Lumen: «We have to strike some sort of balance in which we are more demanding about access to the sacraments. People have to realize that the sacraments are religious events in which we encounter Jesus.»
