The approved projects address various aspects of the integral development of communities: health, housing, potable water, schooling, communal infrastructure, production, nutrition, and religious and civic formation.

Since February 1992, when John Paul II established the Vatican-based foundation, almost $19 million have been donated and allocated to more than 2,000 projects.

The foundation’s administrative council approved the projects during a meeting last week in Brasilia. More than a third of the 222 projects involve production — farming, micro-businesses and communitarian stores.

The projects presented at the meeting were submitted with recommendation letters from the bishops of the places where they will be carried out.
