Cardinal Sodano: Ailing Pope Knows What to Do

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 7, 2005 (Zenit.org).- The possibility of John Paul II’s resignation for health reasons is a question of conscience for the Pope, who can make the best decision, says the Vatican secretary of state.

“Let’s leave the question of resignation to the Pope’s conscience; if there is someone who knows what has to be done, it is he,” said Cardinal Angelo Sodano today, when inaugurating the John Paul II International Bookstore, near St. Peter’s Square.

His comments came as the Holy Father continued to recuperate at a Rome hospital for complications from the flu.

“If there is a man who has wonderful wisdom, it is he,” Cardinal Sodano said. “We must have enormous confidence in him. He loves the Church more than anyone. He knows what has to be done.”

He added: “Let’s not be worried: The Lord Jesus guides his Church. And the Lord is great.”
