7-Year Jail Term Levied in Blasphemy Case

MULTAN, Pakistan, MARCH 2, 2005 (Zenit.org).- A 30-year-old Christian has been sentenced under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws to seven years in jail for desecrating the Koran.

«It is a tragic situation,» Bishop Joseph Coutts of Faisalabad told AsiaNews. «This law strikes at the poor, those who cannot defend themselves, the people who lack the means to be heard.»

According to the judge, Bashir Masih tore a copy of the Koran to use in some occult practices.
