The Vatican Grottoes, where he is buried, are currently closed to the public. An announcement will be made Monday as to when the area beneath the basilica will be open.

Vatican spokesman Joaquín Navarro Valls said that a simple white marble gravestone will be placed on John Paul II’s tomb. The inscription will include his name and the date of his birth and death.

After the funeral rites on Friday, the body of John Paul II was buried in the former resting place of Blessed John XXIII. The remains of the blessed, who died in 1963, were transferred to the Vatican basilica Sept. 3, 2000, after his beatification.
