Number of Elector Cardinals Falls to 113

VATICAN CITY, JULY 19, 2005 (Zenit.org).- The number of elector cardinals has decreased to 113 as Spanish Cardinal Francisco Álvarez Martínez, retired archbishop of Toledo, marked his 80th birthday.

The prelate, who retired in October 2002, turned 80 last Thursday.

The College of Cardinals now numbers 181, including 68 of non-electors who are age 80 or older. The electors could vote in a conclave.

Pope John Paul II set the maximum number of elector cardinals at 120.
