New Bishop Named for San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, California, JULY 26, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI has named Father Rutilio del Riego auxiliary bishop of San Bernardino, California, announced the Vatican press office today.

Father del Riego, member of the Fraternity of Diocesan Worker Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was until now pastor of the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Riverside, California.

The new bishop was born in Valdesandinas, Spain, in 1940, and ordained a priest in 1965.

Bishop Gerald Barnes is the current bishop of San Bernardino.

The San Bernardino Diocese was created on Nov. 6, 1978. It was formerly part of the Diocese of San Diego.
