Father Blume, 59, until now was undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Travelers.
He will receive episcopal ordination, with the dignity of archbishop, the Holy See said in its announcement today.
Michael A. Blume was born in South Bend, Indiana, on May 30, 1946. He was ordained a priest Dec. 23, 1972.
He obtained a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a degree in theology from the Gregorian University.
A teacher of theology in Ghana’s Cape Coast Regional Seminary from 1975 to 1983, Father Blume was later provincial of the Society of the Divine Word in Ghana, Benin and Togo (1983-1990), and secretary-general of the Divine Word missionaries from 1990 to 1994.
He began to serve on the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Travelers in April 1995. He was named undersecretary of the council in April 2000.
