Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz of Krakow will attend the celebration along with representatives of other states on Aug. 31 in Gdansk, the Vatican press office announced.
Solidarity was the first non-Communist labor union in the Soviet Bloc. It was formed by the workers of the Gdansk shipyard who fought for the right to create their own independent labor organization.
Solidarity was outlawed in December 1981. It continued underground until Poland peacefully transitioned into a democracy in 1989.
