Archbishop Quevedo, 66, was elected by the organization’s central committee at a recent meeting in Thailand, reported the Vatican agency Fides.

In recent years the archbishop has actively collaborated with the group, helping to draft several key documents.

His first major job will be to prepare for the Asian Mission Congress to be held in Thailand in October 2006. Organized jointly with the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, the event is expected to draw more than 1,000 delegates.

The Hong Kong-based federation was instituted with the approval of the Holy See.

Its recent activities include a symposium, held in Thailand, on the relationship between social communications and traditional culture in Asia.
