The de facto primate of Sri Lanka has warned that “international meddlings” are a threat to the sovereignty of the country.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, has said that the US request to investigate human rights violations in Sri Lanka “amounts to an inappropriate foreign intervention into an internal problem.”
“It is not conducive to engage in such measures when the report on the commission of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation presented a common programme to grant redress to the victims of the war. Such meddlings will pave the way for the destructions of the economic and spiritual co-existence,” he said.
The cardinal noted that past experiences of US and European countries have exacerbated problems rather than solved them.
Speaking on a Sri Lankan radio talkshow, Cardinal Ranjith said that given the current circumstances, foreign entities should “not be given the opportunity to resolve the problems of the country.”
