Caritas in Veritate International to Host Pope Francis Awards in Phoenix

Three Honorees Will Be Awarded for their Work in Charity and Leadership

Caritas in Veritate International (CiVI)will be awarding the Pope Francis Awards to three honorees for their work in the areas of Charity and Leadership. ‘

The awards ceremony will take place on December 2nd at the Arizona Country Club, In Phoenix, Arizona. The honorees are Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes, President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, Mrs. Virginia G. Piper, who will be awarded posthumously for her philanthropic work, and Msgr. Anthony Figueiredo, a Spiritual Director at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. Msgr. Figueiredo also serves as VP of Caritas International for Relations with Bishops.

More than 260 guests from various faiths, government leaders and members of the diplomatic corps from Belgium, Spain, France, Estonia, Romania, Poland and Malta will be attending.

Henry Cappello, president of Caritas in Veritate International, explained that during the Pope Francis Gala Award Ceremony, four distinguished leaders in the community, Baron Michael Chan, Mr. and Mrs. Michael and Sheila Geddes, and Mr. James Cavnar, will be also recognized as Papal Ambassadors for Charity and Truth. CiVI’s Papal Ambassadors for Charity & Truth are “faithful Christians who have achieved public recognition for distinguished accomplishment in their careers, communities and Church, and have made Charity and Truth one of their passionate causes through financial and volunteer support.”

Mr. Cappello, along with Msgr. Figueiredo and Mr. James Cavnar, and several other members held a private meeting with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, in November. In an interview with ZENIT, Mr. Cappello said the visit was an encouragement for the work carried out by Caritas in Veritate International.

“He wished to encourage us in our endeavor to keep together charity and faith,” Cappello recalled. “‘Faith without charity is meaningless,’ he said. ‘Charity without faith is meaningless. The two must be kept together.’”

Founded in 2010, Caritas in Veritate is a “confederation of Catholic institutions, dedicated to recruit, mobilize and engage volunteers as a response to Pope Benedict’s call for Charity in Truth.”
