Pope Receives President of Republic of Cyprus

Discussion of Migrants and Religious Freedom

This morning, Monday 18 November 2019, in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, the Holy Father Francis received in audience the President of the Republic of Cyprus, His Excellency Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, who subsequently met with His Eminence Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, accompanied by His Excellency Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States.

The existing good relations between the Holy See and the Republic of Cyprus were evoked, and the parties spoke about the domestic situation, with particular reference to the anticipated resumption of talks intended to promote the reunification process. Furthermore, some issues of mutual interest were discussed, such as the reception of migrants and challenges related thereto, religious freedom, and minority rights.

Finally, attention turned to the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the entire region, highlighting the need to promote peace and stability through dialogue and negotiation, respecting human rights and international law.
