A Catholic parish in Marikina City, Philippines, has its own weapon to help stem the spread of coronavirus — the sewing machine.
CBCP News reported that Holy Family Parish has turned its sewing livelihood project to help fight the virus, making reusable fabric masks for those who can’t access or afford them.
Fr. Ferdinand Delatado, the parish priest, said their few machines have a huge role to play during this crisis.
“We are giving these face masks for free to poor families in the parish,” Fr. Delatado said.
The parish has long been helping some families with its rag-sewing program for them to earn income.
“So we thought of using our machines as well to help the needy,” he said.
Aside from the face masks, the parish has also been providing food and other aid to the poor communities.
With its limited resources, the parish on Monday organized an online benefit concert to raise funds for its ongoing relief operations.
Dubbed as “Concert of Healing and Hope,” Fr. Delatado said that the initiative has received pledges of support from some viewers.
“The top need is really food because of the lockdown,” he said.
