Vatican Announces the Start of Its Peace Mission in Ukraine

On June 5 and 6, 2023, Card. Matteo Zuppi will visit kyiv as envoy of Pope Francis.

(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 06.05.2023).- The Holy See Press Office announced the start of the peace mission alluded to on May 20, which is headed by Cardinal Matteo Zuppi in the name of the Pope. 

Specifically, on June 5-6, 2023, Cardinal Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna and President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, is visiting Kiev as Pope Francis’ envoy. The main objective of this initiative is to listen in depth to the Ukrainian Authorities on possible ways to attain a just peace and to support gestures of humanity that will contribute to alleviate the tensions. 

In at least two statements to the press, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See’s Secretary of State, has said that the immediate objective of the mission, headed by Cardinal Zuppi, is not mediation but an attempt “to foster an atmosphere, an environment that can lead to ways of peace.”
