(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 22.04.2024).- Portuguese emigrant María José Marques da Silva Carvalho, 60, diagnosed with lateral amyotrophic sclerosis, had an emotional meeting with the Holy Father last week, during which she shared her moving testimony of faith in face of adversity.

In an intimate moment, both seated in wheelchairs, María José, affectionately known as “Mrs Zeza,” expressed her conviction that her faith is stronger than any illness. Her testimony spread widely on the Vatican’s social networks, where her words resounded profoundly in the Pope’s heart.

The Holy Father, visibly moved by María José’s spiritual strength, praised her for her courage and determination. “What you said is lovely: my faith is greater than the limitations of my pain. Thank you very much. What a beautiful testimony,” said Pope Francis, acknowledging her inspiration for many.

Accompanied by her husband, José Soares de Carvalho, María José expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to meet with the Pope. “I never thought I’d come here. I had a dream, but God made my dream a reality, before you. It’s such a great faith,” she said excitedly.

The Portuguese family, resident in Germany for decades, is an active part of the Portuguese-speaking Catholic community in Hamburg. The Catholic mission organized this trip to the Vatican, giving María José and her family the opportunity to experience this unique and significant moment in their lives.
