(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 08.03.2024).- On the afternoon of Saturday, August 3, the Vatican’s Press Office released a statement condemning a controversial segment from the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games held on July 26. The segment in question featured a satirical portrayal of the Last Supper, a pivotal event in the life of Jesus Christ.

«The Holy See, saddened by certain scenes from the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, joins the voices raised in recent days to deplore the offense caused to many Christians and believers of other religions,» the statement read.

The Vatican’s disapproval echoes sentiments expressed by numerous Christian leaders and organizations worldwide. Additionally, the presidents of Turkey and Iran’s government have also voiced strong objections against the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

«In a prestigious event that brings the world together around common values, there should be no allusions that ridicule the religious convictions of many people,» the statement continued.

Throughout the week, there had been growing criticism regarding the silence of the Pope and the Vatican, especially as Muslim leaders were quick to denounce the ceremony. The Vatican’s response seeks to address these concerns and reaffirm the importance of respecting religious beliefs.

The Vatican’s statement concluded with a pointed reminder: «Freedom of expression, which is evidently not being questioned, finds its limit in respect for others.»
