In a note sent to ZENIT, the episcopate’s Permanent Committee said that Bishop Tomás González Morales of Punta Arenas was interviewed in May by a Chilean judge who is investigating a pedophilia network, after the prelate’s name seemed to have been mentioned in the case.
The 69-year-old prelate said last week that he responded to the magistrate’s questions, explaining that he did not know the leader of the network and that he had no connections with the case.
The press published confusing interpretations of the news, which prompted the episcopate’s statement in the bishop’s favor.
«At this time of trial of our brother, Bishop Tomás González Morales, » the statement said, «… we join him in prayer and express all our solidarity to him.»
