U.S. Envoy Named for Cabinet Post

WASHINGTON, D.C., DEC. 9, 2004 (Zenit.org).- U.S. President George Bush announced that Jim Nicholson, current U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, is his choice as the next secretary of the Veterans Affairs Department.

Nicholson, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, would succeed Anthony Principi.

«As secretary of Veterans Affairs,» Bush said in an announcement ceremony today, «[Nicholson] will lead a department of more than 230,000 employees responsible for ensuring … that our nation’s veterans receive the health care and other benefits our country has promised them.»

Nicholson stood at his side, with his wife and two of their children looking on.

For his part, Nicholson said: «Mr. President, I am grateful to have represented our country at the Vatican and we will really miss Rome and our wonderful team at the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See.»
