Less Than 30 Priests Serve Some 16,000 Catholics in Region Populated by 11M

Pope Francis has named Bishop Thomas Ignatius MacWan as archbishop of Gandhinagar, India.

The 62-year-old was ordained in 1988.

He was serving as bishop of Ahmedabad. He succeeds Archbishop Stanislaus Fernandes, who resigned upon having reached the age limit.

The Archdiocese of Gandhinagar has a population of some 11 million. Close to 16,000 of those are Catholic, served by some 30 priests and 110 religious.
