On Wednesday, in the wake of intimidation of Christian citizens by Muslim extremists, the group Youth Can appealed to President Olusegun Obasanjo to declare a state of emergency in the municipalities of Tawafa Balewa and Bogoro.

Last February, Kaduna´s parliament approved the enforcement of a partial form of Shariah, or Islamic law. The announcement triggered ethnic-religious confrontations which led to an estimated 1,300 to 2,000 deaths. Shariah is in force in nine Nigerian states.
