The Vatican Press Office gave no details of today´s meeting. The audience took place following Madl´s inauguration of a Hungarian cultural station in Italy, which will offer concerts and other performances in Rome until December, before going to 12 other Italian cities.
Madl has tried to win Italy´s support for his country, which is hoping for entry into the European Union in 2004.
Of Hungary´s more than 10 million inhabitants, 67.5% are Roman Catholic, 20% are Calvinist, 5% are Lutheran, and 7.5% are atheist or other.
The Holy Father visited Hungary in June 1991, shortly after the collapse of the Soviet bloc, and in September 1996.
