Plea for Peace Comes as Israel Votes

JERUSALEM, FEB. 6, 2001 (Zenit.org).- With hardliner Ariel Sharon poised for victory in Israeli elections, a Catholic group urged Palestinian and Israeli authorities to reach an accord to ensure a lasting peace in the troubled region.

In the final hours of voting in Israel, the message of 43 priests and religious of the Association of «Pilgrimages to the Holy Land with the Franciscans» arrived in Jerusalem, asking for a peace accord, with the help of international organizations.

Israeli television projects that Likud Party leader Sharon will win a resounding victory over incumbent Prime Minister Ehud Barak, based on exit polls, CNN reported.
