The chair is the initiative of the University of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Angelicum. In statements to the Vidimus Dominum news agency, the university explained that the objective of the center «is to study historically the influence of sacred art in past culture, and … to analyze the theoretical points of view that can renew its significant presence in the era of globalization and multi-cultures.»

The chair will be under the authority of the rector of the university. It organizes an annual international conference. It also offers scholarships for students, coordinates courses at the Angelicum on the subject, and organizes guided tours in Rome and Florence.
