Weapons-for-Bibles Swap Planned in Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, JUNE 18, 2002 (Zenit.org).- With government support, Catholic priests and evangelical pastors of the Dominican Republic will collect weapons and exchange them for Bibles, as part of a delinquency-prevention program.

The priests will begin this Sunday first by collecting Bibles from house to house. Under the motto “Arms for Bibles,” Catholics and evangelicals are seeking to halt delinquency, which in May alone caused 15 deaths.

Father Rogelio Cruz, parish priest of Christ the King Church, north of Santo Domingo, said the program hopes to have “young Dominicans see that there is another way of life, without violence or delinquency.”

This program coincides with the Safe City operations, implemented last weekend by the national police, which resulted in 1,046 arrests.
