Chilean Government Rejects Ban on "Morning-After" Pill

The Supreme Court last week banned the pill on the grounds that it is abortifacient and thus violates the Chilean Constitution.

The government stated it will respect the decision to annul the authorization for the Silesia laboratory to produce the pill -- the reason for the court´s ruling -- but it will allow the Public Health Institute to continue to use other similar medications.

The Public Health Institute reported that on Aug. 24 it approved the application of the Grunenthal laboratory to produce Postinor-2, which has the same abortifacient effect.
