Pope Francis has appointed a new apostolic nuncio to Haiti, just as a meeting in the Vatican gathered officials from the island and the universal Church to consider the reconstruction efforts five years after the deadly earthquake that decimated the island.
Archbishop Eugene Martin Nugent was named apostolic nuncio in Haiti on Saturday, the same day as the meeting.

Archbishop Nugent was formerly apostolic nuncio in Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles, and apostolic delegate in the Cormoros Islands, with the function of apostolic delegate in La Reunion, France. He is 56 years old and a native of Gortaderra Scariff, Ireland.
