Australian Firm Reportedly Creates Man-Pig Hybrid

SYDNEY, Australia, MAR. 13, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Australian authorities confirmed that a Melbourne firm injected a human cell nucleus into a receptive pig cell, allowing it to develop to the stage of 32 cells, before interrupting the experiment.

According to Monday´s issue of the Daily Telegraph, the experiment was carried out in 1999 by the biogenetic firm Stem Cell Sciences Pty Ltd.

The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator denied that the experiment had anything to do with cloning. Rather, it said, it was an attempt to produce a «human hybrid.» The office said the government will not investigate the case.
